Reframing the negative into the positive is second nature for some people; however others can learn it through practice. Right now, with the challenges in the economy, being able to look at situations in new ways can make a big difference. For instance, when a new idea is expressed, it can be dismissed by someone saying “It will never fly.” However, if it is countered by “We will never know unless we try,” there is room for exploration of the idea. Reframing the negative statement through a positive response opens up creativity and hope.
Having a “can do” attitude puts you in charge of yourself. It allows you to make a realistic assessment of yourself and the situation at hand. If, however, your initial response is negative, you cut off the possibility of finding solutions. You will have closed off the possibility of looking at the situation in a fresh way. All of us have a creative side to us. We may have learned to squelch our creativity because we felt it was discouraged. As adults we have the ability to unlearn what does not serve us well. One of the most important self-mastery skills is to develop a positive attitude about life. A “can do” attitude makes finding solutions easier and life more rewarding.
